Principal Secretary of Tourism and Cultural Department V.K. Jayakody said that the Kolli Hills will soon get a facelift to become an important tourist destination in the district. He made this statement after inaugurating the two-day ‘Valvil Ori and Tourism Festival' atop Kolli Hills on Tuesday.
The Principal Secretary said that the Tourism Minister would soon visit the hills and conduct a study on the requirements of this region and fulfil them.
Proposal
The Namakkal district administration has also submitted a comprehensive proposal to the State and Union Governments on the requirements to make Kolli Hills a better tourist destination, the Secretary said.
Though the hill has a natural beauty crowned with Agayagangai waterfalls, forest cover, boat house and temples, one of the major setbacks that affects inflow of tourists is that they have to climb 70 hairpin bends. Saying so, he added that the alternative road to reach the hilltop with fewer hairpin bends would come to use very soon.
He expressed confidence that improving sanitation facilities and access to various places on the hill will increase inflow of tourists better and assured of necessary action at the earliest.
Commissioner for Tourism and Managing Director of Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) R.C. Mohan Doss was of the opinion that investing on tourism department was worthwhile as it would serve dual purposes of increasing revenue and providing more job opportunities for the local population.
“Investing on tourism development activities on the hills would be a boon for the tribal people and villagers living in the hillside hamlets,” he said. He noted that the District Administration has taken strides to convince the State and Union Government to carry out 21 works to the tune of Rs. 3.63 crore.
District Collector J. Kumaragurubaran said that financial assistance and other benefits worth Rs. 2.12 crore were distributed to 2,679 beneficiaries during the inaugural of the two-day event. It included financial assistance of Rs. 1.12 crore to 25 villages under the Vaazhnthu Kaattuvom scheme.
Superintendent of Police Pravesh Kumar, District Forest Officer Ashish Kumar Srivastava, District Revenue Officer R. Seethalakshmi and MLA of Paramathi-Velur Assembly segment U. Thaniyarasu also spoke.
History of Kolli Hills that was narrated by artistes through various forms of folk dance, drama and music was the highlight of the first day of the festival. Earlier an exhibition of various government department stalls was also inaugurated.
